In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.
This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.

It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

I was on the prescription for Propecia for over a year and my dermatologist told me about it because she says it's really cheap. So what do I do? I ask her if I have any other issues with the drug and she says it's only for the treatment of skin cancer. How does it compare with Proscar? What do I do to get pregnant?

My dermatologist is very happy with the results. I was also able to get pregnant on Proscar after my dermatologist prescribed it. My son's family doctor told me to start with the 5th day of treatment, but it only works with Proscar. I am so glad I went that way.

Thanks, I'm not sure what to make of this information. My family doctor prescribed Proscar for my 2 kids. I'm currently on 1 mg of the drug and they are in the second one, 3 mg.

Proscar and Proscar- 2 mg is about the same, but they are different meds. Proscar is the one that works for both children and adults, and Proscar is for children and adults.

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that I am now on Proscar, and that I am now pregnant. I have to see my dermatologist first, so I'm not too concerned. I have no idea what to do with this meds. Hello, I am on Proscar and I have a very common dermatologic issue with hair loss. I have had it for years but has been having to stop it for years. I started using it for a year and it has taken me away from my current condition and has taken away all the hair. I am now on Proscar and will continue to be on it, and will not be using it until I have my own hair.

Hi Dr. I have been on Proscar for a year and my dermatologist said it will take me away from my current condition, and that it will be fine as long as I continue to take it. It is not the right medication to stop my hair loss or take it. I had to stop taking it for a year because of the hair loss, and it has taken me to the doctor who told me to stop. It is the best thing I have ever done. I have used it for years and it has been very effective. I will never stop taking it again. I will never stop taking Proscar again.

Thank you so much for all the information! I have not had the hair loss. I have been taking Proscar and the hair loss is so bad. I have been on Proscar for a year and had it for the first year and my hair started to come back. Then it was all gone and I started to lose hair and all the hair has been gone for over a year. I am now pregnant with my baby, and I am going to try Proscar for a while and see if that helps my hair.

Thanks again for your help and sorry I am not aware of the pros and cons of the Proscar. I have used Proscar a few times to get rid of the hair loss, but I have not tried Proscar or Proscar- but I have used Proscar a few times and it has helped the hair loss.
